School back in the old daysThe school was originally located in the centre of Närpes and between 1861 and 1920 it functioned as a school. Before it was moved to Öjskogsparken in the 1970's, it also functioned as a private home. At Öjskogsparken the school has been rebuilt and furnished as it once was. The writing material consisted of slate, chalk and hare´s paw, which can all be viewed in the little cottage. The teacher, who often lived in a small room in the schoolhouse, taught the children spelling and mathematics, but most importantly, moral and religious behaviour; for instance can the effects of alcohol be seen in the posters on the wall. It was also custom that one or more children came to school early in the morning to heat the schoolroom and carry in water for the day.
